Óðinnic View on Recovery and Restraint
By RFU Recovery Leader Desiree Alwine
As an Óðinnist I personally view recovery not as a weakness, but as a discipline. Óðinn is not a god of indulgence or excess; he is a god of will, sacrifice, and self-mastery. He gave an eye for wisdom. He hung nine nights upon the World Tree to gain the runes. He shows us that power is earned through restraint and endurance.
Overindulgence dulls the mind and weakens the will. Whether it be in drink, food, lust, gambling, nicotine, etc, this excess scatters focus and erodes honor. One who cannot govern themselves cannot claim strength. Self-rule comes before wisdom.
Óðinnic practice values clarity of mind and sharpness of perception. Intoxication without measure, compulsive behavior, and unchecked appetite cloud judgment. They make a person reactive rather than deliberate. The path of Óðinn demands awareness of thought, of word, and of action.
Recovery, then, becomes a sacred act of reclaiming sovereignty over oneself. To step back from overindulgence is to realign with discipline, with purpose, and with the pursuit of wisdom. It is choosing long-term strength over short-term pleasure. It is honoring the principle that power without control is chaos.
An Óðinnist striving for growth should understand that true freedom is not the ability to indulge every impulse, but the strength to master them.
In this way, we should seek to honor Óðinn, always!
